July 6 delivered two major Round of 16 outcomes at the 2026 World Cup. Spain beat Portugal 1-0 through a late substitute goal, while Belgium dismantled the United States 4-1 in Seattle. England had already sealed a 3-2 win over co-host Mexico.
Spain 1-0 Portugal
At Dallas Stadium, the Iberian derby stayed goalless until stoppage time. Substitute Mikel Merino finished in the 91st minute to send Spain into the quarterfinals.
Portugal exits, and Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed this was his final World Cup. Spain advances to face Belgium in the last eight.
Belgium 4-1 United States
Belgium were clinical in Seattle. Charles De Ketelaere scored twice, with Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku also on the scoresheet in a 4-1 victory.
All three co-hosts — the United States, Mexico and Canada — are now out. Belgium reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2018.
England 3-2 Mexico
The weather-delayed Mexico City tie finished 3-2 to England. The Three Lions will meet Norway, who had already knocked out Brazil, in the quarterfinals.
